The rise of white van woman
Is the stereotype of the white van man dying out? The number of female applications for heavy vehicle licences has increased by 29 per cent – and 32 per cent of van buyers are female.
The research, conducted by AutoTrader, suggests that more women than ever before are buying commercial vans.
In fact, a considerable proportion of these licence applications are to drive some of the heaviest vehicles on the road. So why the shift?
Vans are proving more popular for a range of occupations and leisure pursuits, and women are opting to train and succeed in what were once very male-dominated career paths.
Interestingly, of the 1.4 million households in the UK that own a van, two in five claim that they use the vehicle for activities that are not business-related.
As the vehicle of choice for those who enjoy bike riding and other equipment-heavy hobbies, a van can provide a more cost-effective option than a larger car or SUV.
