Bursting to get out

Bursting to get out

Fox News reported that a burst standpipe in a multistorey car park Minneapolis, US, created a waterfall down the stairs of the building and through the numerous lift shafts, leaving members of the public hurrying to escape the scene.

The standpipe, which carries water throughout the building so that firefighters can connect their hoses to it during an emergency, was thought to have frozen and burst because of cold weather, sending an impressive quantity of water cascading down the stairwells.

This wasn’t the only case of frozen burst pipes causing disasters in public spaces for the city, with the fire department attending to around a dozen similar calls that day.
