The technology to create a connected home is already out there. Installers can help customers take advantage by fitting kit and explaining how they can get all the benefits.

In a connected home, things work together automatically to help keep people comfortable, safe, and secure. When you add Nest products to a home, they instantly work together and make each other better. Installers have a vital role to play in advising customers of the potential of smart homes, explaining how it all works and even helping to install
or set up products.

Step 1: Install Nest Learning Thermostat and set up Nest Heat Link

Chose the installation location. If there is already a thermostat in the home in the right place, simply replace it with a Nest Thermostat. If you want to install it somewhere else, you can power it from a wall socket or use the Nest Stand (sold separately) to put the Nest Thermostat on a desk or bookcase. The Nest Heat Link and the Nest Thermostat work with the boiler to control the temperature of the home. The Heat Link connects to the boiler and controls the hot water tank. It communicates with the Nest Thermostat wirelessly to turn on and off, or modulate the heat.

Step 2: Download the app

The Nest is compatible with most mobiles and computers. It brings Nest products together in one place, so there is no need to switch between apps. And you don’t need to programme everything to work together: it all happens automatically.

Step 3: Demonstrate the features

Many apps can give you data. But it’s much harder to turn that data into something helpful. The Nest app doesn’t just tell you what – it also tells you why. Nest products can show customers information that they’ve never seen before, such as why they used so much energy last week. They can start to see patterns and understand their home better.

Step 4: Install Nest Protect

The Nest Protect is a smoke and CO detector with an industrial-grade smoke sensor. It tests itself automatically and lasts up to a decade. Nest Protect tells customers what the alarm is, where it is and what to do about it with voice and colours.

Nest Protect uses Wi-Fi to securely send alerts to the customer’s phone. It also has Bluetooth LE so customers can see their alarms quickly and silence a false alarm from their phone. All Nest Protects also talk to each other using reliable Nest Weave technology. Even if the Wi-Fi goes down, Nest Protect can still tell customers what and where the trouble is.

Step 5: Install Nest Cam security cameras

Nest Cam security cameras help you look after your home 24/7, and can alert customers to a break-in before it happens by sending an alert to their phone, showing the whole scene with a 130-degree wide-angle view.

Step 6: Activate Nest Aware

Customers can’t always be watching their video feed. Nest Cam looks for motion and listens for conspicuous sounds, like a boom or the crash of a window breaking. If Nest Cam thinks something’s up, it’ll send a phone alert or an email with a key image from the event. And if you miss an alert, you can see photos of activity from the last three hours for free in the app.

Nest Aware also knows a person from a thing, sends out person alerts, and identifies activity zones, so customers get alerts when something happens in important areas.

Step 7: Explain about home integration

Show customers how they can add other products to their smart home. Today, lots of brands that you already use can connect to Nest, such as the Philips Hue lights and Wemo switches. More are being added to the list every day. Just look for the Works with Nest logo, or visit the Nest website.
